Reflection, Dialogue and the Possibilities of Person-Centered Care

Learning objectives:
1. Define the meaning of patient-centered care from a variety of perspectives: evidence-based, philosophical, ethical and humanistic.
2. Describe how this perspective may be taught and learned.
3. List ways of knowing and roles of reflection and dialogue involved in teaching about delivery of health care with excellence and justice.
4. Identify the ways in which the creative arts and humanities may be incorporated to achieve the goal of rehumanizing medicine (i.e. practicing medicine with humanistic intent).
ARNO KUMAGAI, MD, is Professor of Medicine and Vice Chair for Education, Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto. He also holds the F.M. Hill Chair in Humanism Education from Women’s College Hospital and the University of Toronto.
Arno was founding director of the Family Centered Experience, a unique small group-based program at the University of Michigan Medical School that engaged individuals and their stories of chronic illness to teach medical students patient-centered care. His current research interests include the use of narratives and creative art in medical education, transformative learning, faculty development, critical pedagogy, and multicultural education. He is a Cross-Appointed Researcher at the U of T’s Wilson Centre and at the Centre for Ambulatory Care Education. Arno is the recipient of numerous teaching awards, including the AAMC/Pfizer Award for Humanism in Medical Education, the Leonard Towe Award for Humanism in Medicine, the Kaiser Permanente Award for Teaching Excellence, and the University of Michigan’s Distinguished Leaders in Diversity Award.
