The Health Science Research course is a second year course in the MD Program that provides students with an introduction to the principles of research, and is directed at helping students understand and use research to contribute to improving the health of people and populations.
The major teaching modalities employed in the HSR course are:
- E-modules - the core curriculum of the course
- small group tutorials
- the Practicum Exercise
This e-learning module is designed to help students and faculty understand the practicum exercise, a major component of the HSR course. The e-learning module will address:

Contextual variation is when learners are exposed to the same concept in two different contexts. When building in contextual variation the concept remains the same but the context is changed, making the original concept more salient to the learner. In order to introduce variation on the concepts learned in the Case-based learning (CBL), we have been creating “what if” questions/scenarios.
This primer has been designed for curriculum developers and CBL tutors to provide guidance around how to design and how to teach using "what if" scenario questions.
